Hunter's Funeral Home, a family-owned business, serves the Roanoke-Chowan area
from three locations: Ahoskie, Gates and Murfreesboro. Founded in 1949 by the late
Howard Hunter Sr. and the late Madge Hunter, the company also operated as an
ambulance service. After Howard Hunter Sr. retired in 1990, he was succeeded by
his two sons, Howard Jr. and Andrew Sr. Both brothers graduated from North
Carolina Central University and were very active community leaders. Andrew served
on the Ahoskie Town Council and Howard Jr. served as a member of the North
Carolina House of Representatives. Howard Jr. departed this life in January, 2007.
Andrew also departed this life on December 2007.

The business is now operated by the third generation, Howard Hunter III. The areas
served by Hunter's Funeral Home includes Hertford, Bertie, Northampton, Gates,
Chowan and Perquimans counties in North Carolina and Virginia. Howard III is a
graduate of Chowan University where he majored in elementary education. He also
holds a degree in Funeral Services from Fayetteville Technical Community College.
He is married to Wanda Hunter and has four children. Howard also serves on the
Hertford County Board of Commissioners and is currently the Vice President for the
North Carolina Association of County Commissioners;  Hertford Co. Public Health
Authority as Chairman; Mid-East Commission; Workforce Development; served on
Economic Development Board; and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is
a member of Soul Saving Station Church in Ahoskie. Hunter's Funeral Home is made
up of modern equipment and a genuine interest in helping people in their time of need.
