Our History
Hunter’s Funeral Home, a family-owned business, serves the Roanoke-Chowan area from three locations: Ahoskie, Gates and Murfreesboro. Founded in 1949 by the late Howard Hunter Sr. and the late Madge Hunter, the company also operated as an ambulance service. After Howard Hunter Sr. retired in 1990, he was succeeded by his two sons, Howard Jr. and Andrew Sr. Both brothers graduated from North Carolina Central University and were very active community leaders. Andrew served on the Ahoskie Town Council and Howard Jr. served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. Howard Jr. departed this life in January, 2007. Andrew also departed this life on December 2007.
The areas served by Hunter’s Funeral Home includes: Hertford, Bertie, Northampton, Gates, Chowan and Perquimans counties in North Carolina and Southeastern Virginia.
The business is now operated by the third generation, Howard Hunter III. Howard III is a graduate of Chowan University where he majored in elementary education. He also holds a degree in Funeral Services from Fayetteville Technical Community College. He has four children. Howard III is currently serving his 3rd term in the NC House of Representatives representing the 5th District; He is on the Agriculture, Appropriations, Appropriations Information Technology, Ethics, Heath, Rules and Operations of the House and Transportation Committees. Rep. Hunter previously served on the Hertford County Board of Commissioners and as the President of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners; Mid-East Commission; Workforce Development; served on Economic Development Board; and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is also the chairman of the Hertford County Public Health Authority. He is a member of Soul Saving Station Church in Ahoskie. Hunter’s Funeral Home is made up of modern equipment and a genuine interest in helping people in their time of need.
